Application [Haven]
Character Name: Fumi Kanno
Canon: Devil Survivor 2
Canon Point: Friday’s Partings, before the Main Character makes their decision on what path to take.
Background/History: Wikia Entry
Previous Game History: N/A
Personality:
If there is one way to describe Fumi, it’s incredibly blunt. She’s nothing like many of the other people she surrounds herself with, to the point where even they call her a force of nature in her own right. It’s not because she’s physically strong, but because of her pragmatism. Fumi is something of a mad scientist caricature mixed in with an opportunist who is willing to go to what lengths she can to do whatever she must for the good of herself and the benefit of others. Within reason, that is. While Fumi is considered a genius, she’s also very self-centered and unwilling to compromise herself in a way that lowers her own perceived self-worth. She’s smart and she knows she’s smart, so she won’t even think of tolerating people who can’t keep up with her or show their worth as a member of society.
This comes to a head toward the end of the game, where the Main Character (controlled by the player) must choose who to side with to create a new world. The choices are Ronaldo, a man who seeks equality, Daichi who seeks a way toward peace that involves no fighting or Yamato who seeks to establish a meritocracy where talented people prosper and those who cannot measure up are tossed aside as trash. Fumi naturally sides with Yamato, because his way of thinking is naturally in line with her own. She doesn’t believe that she needs to carry people around by the hand because they’re having difficulties and that if someone isn’t willing to sacrifice everything they have then they are doomed to fail. Her own past in regards to this is unknown, but the game implies that she’s very ambitious in the field of science and stepped on many toes to get where she is today. She holds no regrets toward it, believing that she got where she was because she knew what she was doing and didn’t hold back for anyone else. To her, the one person who must always come before others is yourself. Sacrificing oneself for nothing is a pointless endeavor that does no one any good.
However, that’s not to say Fumi is completely cold and unfeeling. She clearly aids JPS because she believes in preserving the world and works her hardest to aid the team with her technological knowledge. She isn’t always nice about it, but she does it because she clearly cares. Though it can be hard to get around how blunt and unapologetic she is at times. She gets consistently annoyed if she feels she has to dumb down her scientific explanations because they’re hard to follow (which they are, for any average person) and even refuses to go into Mt. Fuji to assist in stopping a Septentrion named Mizar until she’s dragged in by Airi because it’s just too damn cold outside to save the world. The two greatest evidence for how she actually does care is the photo she loses of her host family while she study abroad during college, who she cares a great deal for and was very upset over losing the photo at all. There is also a scene toward the end of her Fate events where she stops her own experiment because she thinks Jungo’s life is in danger, whereas in previous experiments she was more willing to let him get hurt over her scientific research.
Fumi Kanno is in short a woman who knows what she wants and is willing to formulate plans to get it, even if it means having to argue with people who don’t approve of her methods. She’s uncompromising and statistical, but not as uncaring as she may come off to those who don’t know her well. Despite being so blunt she’s shown to have close friendships with Makoto and Otome, two fellow JPS workers, and is described by Airi as something of a space case and less so a cold unflappable scientist. There are good qualities to her, but it takes time for them to come out. Though her blunt approach to life does make it hard to befriend her, as she is often quick to judge people based on observations.
Abilities/Powers: Fumi is without super powers, but she does have her devil summoning app. The app allows her to summon demons to fight for her and when they’re done fighting or their energy is depleted, they vanish into data and go back to the phone. As per Haven’s rules, she’ll only bring two demons along with her – Odin and Agares, which are two demons unlocked by leveling up her Fate.
Items/Weapons:
Her cell phone. It won’t be able to make calls of course, but it will house her summoning app to bring about demons. I’ve mentioned above which two she’ll bring with her and no others will be accessible.
The photo of her host family from when she was abroad.
A blue laptop. Not able to do much with it, but it’ll be there.
